A size gate, not a print RIP
The reducer walks a short list of scale and JPEG quality steps. Original size and result size are shown in bytes so you can see whether the download actually cleared 2 MB.
What we will not fake
Encrypted files stay locked. More than 80 pages is refused so the tab does not freeze. Some fonts — especially CJK — may render poorly because this is a browser raster, not a desktop RIP.
FAQ
Is this a lossless shrink?
No. Pages become pictures. You will not be able to select the original text. It is not Ghostscript, Distiller, or a print-shop preflight. If the file is already under 2 MB, say so before you flatten it.
Why 2 MB?
Many forms and mail servers still use a 2 megabyte cap. The target here is 2,097,152 bytes. If a pass lands under that, the download stops. If every pass stays over, you get the smallest file this tab could build.
Does the PDF leave my computer?
No. Reading and redrawing happen in this browser tab.
What if it cannot reach 2 MB?
A long scan or a high page count can stay over the cap even at a rough JPEG. Split the PDF, or accept that this tab has a floor. We will not pretend a 200-page plan set becomes a crisp 2 MB booklet.
