ITIN Application for Non-Residents Who Actually Need One
An ITIN is your personal IRS number when you cannot get a Social Security Number. Most foreign owners of a quiet single-member LLC never need one to file Form 5472. You need one if you personally must file a US return, claim a treaty benefit, or a bank or processor will not finish KYC without it. We prepare Form W-7. We are not advertising ourselves as a Certified Acceptance Agent.
ITIN is not EIN
The EIN belongs to the company. The ITIN belongs to you. Putting the EIN in a personal name field — or the ITIN on a company 5472 as if it were the EIN — is how filings bounce. See EIN versus SSN versus ITIN in the academy if you want the longer explainer.
How W-7 is filed
The IRS wants identity documents that meet its list. Many applicants attach a certified copy of a passport and file W-7 with a tax return. Processing is measured in weeks. We prepare the form and the supporting set. We do not stamp passports as a CAA unless that status is separately true — it is not a claim we make on this site.
Who this is for
Form 1040-NR to file
You have effectively connected income or another reason for a personal US return.
Treaty claim
A benefit that has to sit on a personal filing, not on the LLC’s EIN.
A bank or processor that named ITIN
Not every provider asks. If yours did, the EIN will not substitute.
Renewal
ITINs expire on a published IRS schedule. A lapsed number is a new W-7, not a shrug.
What you get
A yes-or-no first
We will tell you if the LLC filings you hired us for need an ITIN at all.
Form W-7 prepared
Reason codes that match the actual need, not a random checkbox.
Document checklist
What the IRS list accepts. We will not invent a shortcut around certified ID.
Tied to a return when required
Many W-7s travel with the tax return they support.
How the process works
-
1
Prove the need
Return, treaty, or a named KYC demand. Curiosity is not a reason code.
-
2
Collect identity evidence
Passport and whatever else the current W-7 instructions want.
-
3
Prepare W-7
You review it before it goes.
-
4
File and wait
IRS assignment is not overnight. We track what we submitted.
What we need from you
- A concrete reason the IRS would accept.
- Identity document that meets the current W-7 list.
- The tax return or KYC letter, if that is the reason.
- Patience measured in weeks, not hours.
Read this before you start
- An ITIN does not authorize work in the United States and is not a Social Security Number.
- Some banks want an ITIN; many remote business accounts do not. Check the product.
- If you do not need a personal US return, do not apply “just in case” without a reason code that fits.
Common mistakes
Applying because a YouTube video said every LLC owner must
The LLC files 5472 on an EIN. That is a different number.
Sending a color scan that is not a certified copy when the instructions want certified
The IRS rejects thin ID packets.
Using an expired ITIN on a new return
Renew first or with the return, as the instructions allow.
Paying a stranger to “unlock credit” with a fake W-7
We will not touch that.
