How to Write Website Copy
Website copy should name the offer, the buyer, and the next step in language a person would say on the phone. Slogans are not a substitute. If a stranger cannot tell what you do, who it is for, and how to ask, the design will not save the page. This is the writing half of how to build a business website. The labels that help search sit in the on-page SEO guide. The path after they understand you is website conversion optimization.
Write like a careful email to one buyer. If a sentence would embarrass you on a call, cut it. “We help SMBs scale” tells nobody what to do. “We rebuild intake forms so clinics stop losing patient details between the website and the record” is usable. That sentence can become the home-page lead, the meta description, and the first paragraph of a service page.
Decide the job of each URL before you decorate
One page should own one primary job. Home introduces the offer and points to the next step. A service page sells that service: what is included, what is not, typical timeline, how pricing is scoped. About proves you exist. Contact asks. A guide teaches a step. Do not make the service page a recycled blog post, and do not make the blog post a sales letter that never answers the question.
If you cannot write the heading and the call to action before anyone opens a design file, the page is not ready to exist. Extra pages dilute attention. A first site rarely needs more than home, one URL per core service, about, contact, and the legal pages that match how you collect data. Add a project page only if you can describe a real problem, what changed, and what a similar buyer should do next — without inventing a client.
- Name the buyer (role or situation), not “everyone.”
- Name the outcome they pay for, not the hours you spend.
- Name the constraint that makes you a fit (region, industry, project size).
- Name the next step in one verb: call, book, request a quote.
Home, services, and the first screen
A homepage should be long enough to state the offer, who it is for, proof you can stand behind, and the next step. Short is fine if those are present. Long is wasted if the first screen is a slogan and a slider. On a phone, the first viewport has to carry the offer and the action. Secondary links can wait. Navigation that names the work helps; clever labels that hide it cost enquiries — that craft is website navigation best practices.
Service copy should answer the sales call in writing. Cover the objections you already hear: area, timeline, what happens after they enquire, what you will not do. Leave out synonym paragraphs that exist only to repeat a query. If two drafts answer the same job, merge them. Lead generation fails when the page never asks; it also fails when the page asks before it has said anything true. See how to generate leads online for the path from offer to inbox.
Proof should be checkable. Entity details, a named person, hours you answer, a photo of actual work, a license, a process in numbered steps. Scriplit is a Wyoming LLC founded on 9 October 2024 by Adnan Sami — that is ordinary proof, not a slogan. Invented testimonials are not copy; they are a lie. If you have no reviews yet, describe how a project starts and what you need from the buyer.
| Line | Replace with |
|---|---|
| “Full-service digital solutions” | The service and who it is for |
| “Passionate about excellence” | A constraint or deliverable you can keep |
| “Trusted by leading brands” | A fact a stranger can check, or nothing |
| “Contact us today!” | Call, book, or request a quote — one verb |
Titles, case, and the words people see in search
The title tag is the promise in the tab and often in the result. Write the real title first: who it is for and what they get. Put the distinctive part first on a phone-sized result. The how to use a case converter guide is for consistent title case after you have a real sentence — not for decorating a slogan. A case converter will not tell you whether the page should exist.
The visible H1 should match the job of the URL. One H1. Honest subheads that a skimmer can use. Internal links that use the name of the destination, not “click here.” Meta descriptions are not a simple ranking lever. Write them as an honest preview. Do not write clickbait the body does not keep.
If Search Console already shows queries on a live URL, improve that copy before you publish a twin. Scriplit does not have a Search Console API in this project. The academy rule is still: improve URLs that already get impressions instead of spawning lookalikes. Do not invent impression counts to justify a longer draft.
Draft with tools; publish what you will honour
AI can draft. You still have to name real services, real areas, and a next step you will honour. A generated paragraph that invents a testimonial, a city you do not serve, or a result you cannot stand behind is not a shortcut. It is a liability. Use a draft to get words on the page, then cut every claim you would not say to a named person on (901) 401-0039 or at contact@scriplit.com.
Read the page out loud on a phone. If you run out of breath, split the sentence. If you would skip a paragraph as a buyer, delete it. Then click the action. If the form asks for a novel, you wrote a brochure that hides the ask. Scriplit’s web development services implement pages around that copy — the offer, the proof, the form — rather than around a theme demo. Send the URLs and the sentence you want the site to keep through the SEO contact form if search pages are the ones you are rewriting.
- Write the offer sentence a neighbor would understand.
- Give each URL one job, one H1, and one primary action.
- Put checkable proof next to the ask; invent nothing.
- Match titles and leads to the query job, then convert case if you need consistency.
- Test the form or tap-to-call from a phone before you call the copy done.
