Inbound vs Outbound Marketing
Inbound marketing is being found when someone already has a job to do. Outbound marketing is interrupting someone who did not ask yet. Most small businesses need a mix, not a slogan that declares one side “dead.” The useful question is whether the person asked, and whether you can honour the next step when they do. That sits inside what digital marketing is, not beside it.
A lead is still a person who asked to be contacted about a real offer — the definition in how to generate leads online. Inbound and outbound are ways of arriving at that ask. They are not moral categories. They are cost shapes and intent shapes.
Inbound: they came with a job
Someone typed a problem, opened a useful page, or followed a link they chose. Your job is to finish that job: explain the offer, show proof you can stand behind, and present a next step you will actually take. SEO is inbound when the page answers a search. A guide that teaches a step a buyer already asked is inbound. An email to people who subscribed is closer to inbound than a purchased list, because they asked for messages.
Inbound is not free. You pay in writing, technical cleanup, and time before the page earns a click. You also pay when you publish thin pages whose only job is to rank. Those pages are not inbound. They are noise. Google’s spam policies call out scaled content that exists mainly to manipulate rankings. A library of lookalike URLs is not a philosophy. It is a mess you will later merge.
Improve URLs that already get impressions before you invent new ones. That academy rule does not require a Search Console API — Scriplit does not have one in this project — and it does not require invented counts. Open the property, read the queries on the money pages, and rewrite the page that already appears. New URLs are for distinct jobs the current pages do not cover.
- Service and location pages written in buyer language, not slogans.
- Guides that answer a question sales already hears, once, on one URL.
- Permission email to people who opted in, with a way to leave.
- A website that can take the enquiry when the click arrives.
Outbound: you interrupted
Outbound is a call, a cold email, a display ad, or a social placement shown to someone who was doing something else. It can work when the list is tight, the offer is specific, and you stop when the person says no. It fails when the message is generic and the landing page is a home slideshow. Interruption is expensive attention. Spend it on a sentence you would say on a careful call.
Ads are not automatically outbound. Search ads meet a typed job — closer to inbound intent. Display and cold social are closer to outbound. The label matters less than whether the person asked. Read what PPC is as an auction and a landing-page problem, not as a team jersey. A paid click on a vague home page wastes both the ask and the interruption.
| Move | Closer to | Needs from you |
|---|---|---|
| Useful page that answers a search | Inbound | A URL that matches the job and can convert |
| Search ad on a query you fulfil | Inbound intent, paid | A landing page that continues the ad |
| Email to subscribers | Inbound-ish | Permission and a useful reason to write |
| Display or cold social | Outbound | A tight audience and an honest next step |
| Cold call or purchased list | Outbound | A reason to stop, and compliance you will keep |
Cost is per enquiry you wanted
Inbound is often sold as “free traffic.” It is not free. Outbound is often sold as “predictable pipeline.” It is predictable only if you count the enquiries you would have taken, not the meetings that were never a fit. Compare cost per enquiry you wanted, over a quarter, not a slogan. That comparison is the practical half of how to measure marketing results.
A cheap session that never enquires is not cheaper than an expensive session that does. A quarter is long enough to see whether a service page started earning clicks, and whether a campaign’s cost per qualified message held. A week of sessions is not a verdict. Do not switch philosophies because one Tuesday was quiet.
If you cannot see spend, you can still see volume and quality. Report both. A channel that sends the wrong job will look healthy in sessions and miserable in the inbox. Keep one primary conversion as the decision metric. Assisted paths are context. They are not a reason to pretend every view was a win.
Pick a mix you can staff
A small company does not need a full inbound engine and a full outbound floor. It needs the pages that sell, a way to be found for those pages, and optionally one paid or outreach motion while the pages mature. If the site cannot take an enquiry, neither inbound nor outbound will save the month. Fix the hub first.
Use outbound when you have a named list or a tight audience and an offer you can fulfil this quarter. Use inbound when you intend to keep answering the same jobs. Many businesses appear in both. That is allowed. What is not allowed is treating a sponsored result as proof that “SEO is working,” or treating a ranking as proof that the page converts.
Scriplit is a Wyoming LLC founded on 9 October 2024 by Adnan Sami. We will not promise that inbound is cheaper, or that outbound is faster, without looking at the URLs and the inbox. If the work you need is making the pages that already get search impressions worth the click, start with SEO services. Send the offer, the towns or roles you serve, and the live host through the SEO contact form, or call (901) 401-0039.
